Eldar - Thumbs Down?

I have only just ordered my Eldar codex but so far I'm not hearing good things about it. If you have it, what are your thoughts?

Hammers of War

It is difficult to find decent Warhammer 40K documentaries out there but this is the best I've found. Enjoy.

Women Wargamers

A friend posted this to Facebook earlier today and though it deals with historical wargaming as opposed to the Warhammer variety, it is still a good read. In all my years of wargaming I've only ever met one female player. I can't say I have ever seen any in the local Games Workshop the few times I went there.

Outside of fantasy and science fiction being a tad higher on the geek scale than historical games, I wonder if there is any reason for that? Do you know any female players? I certainly think the game could do with more.

More Eldar Previews

I have to be honest and say that I am not a fan of that aircraft design, especially in the picture where you can see the underside. Reminds me too much of the cheap plastic toys I had as a kid.

Eldar Knight?

Is this the new Eldar Knight that so many rumours have been talking about lately? Not long till we find out.

Eldar Codex Teaser

I think I may be the only person who still finds the current Eldar codex really playable. I'm looking forward to seeing what 6th edition gives them but I do hope they don't make them too good.

League Update

Unfortunately I have a fear that our club league is going to go bottom up sooner or later which is going to be a tad dissapointing. It is through no ones fault (though if I was so enclined I could point to the venue) just the side affect of having a break while the venue was renovated and we got moved to a smaller, tighter room.

Due to that it was left for players to organise their games and hopefully play a couple at home to speed things up. This has meant that for some reason certain players are taking their time to play games and the club is far too quiet. Also, and the real reason I fear it will fail, is that one of the two players tipped for total victory has played almost half his games already and won them all. I can see a lot of players then saying that there is no point in playing and it all falls apart.

As I say, nobody's fault and couldn't be helped with the disruption.

I had also hoped that the league coupled with all games (league and friendly) adding to the Midas Crusade would have people playing games to help their faction in said crusade might get games played, but seems not.

An oddness of Allies

Maybe that is what an addition of allies should be called; an oddness.

At the St Neots Primarchs we play a tad differently to most clubs I guess. We don't like fixed list leagues. They get boring. All through the history of the club we have played changable lists. You know your opponent's codex, sometimes you know the mission in advance, and you build lists around it. Initially it helped offset the boredom of fixed lists and it helped the FLGS that we had at the time. It works for us. Pick up games, well, that is up the individual players.

Anyway, to make a long story even longer, we had something odd pop up last week. I meant to post about it and forgot until tonight. Player A turned up with a Grey Knights list expecting to face Chaos Daemons. His opponent turned up with minimal daemons and a maxed out allies block of Chaos Space Marines. Player A got crushed. He wasn't upset about it or anything but he did feel that it was a tad unfair as his opponent was supposed to be playing daemons.

It got me thinking that maybe next time around I may have to set a 50% of points limit on allies for this reason. But that isn't what I am posting about. I'm curious about a couple things and wondering what you all out there thing and what your experiences are.

1. Do you play allies yourself? yes, no, and why?

2. Do you like it when an opponent brings allies? yes, no, why or why not?

3. How would you view it if an opponent turned up with minimal FoC and the rest of an army made up of allies?

A sort of rant

Ok, so this isn't really a rant but it something that I have started to find does impede my enjoyment of the game. I'm sure some of you reading this will just roll your eyes and whatnot, but bare with me.

I play vanilla space marines and have done ever since Warhammer 40K was first dropped on our selves twenty five years ago (with a break during the horror fest that was 2nd edition). I like space marines but I'm not the sort of player who wants them to be utterly awesome or to have them play like they are represented in the novels.

However the bugbear in the room for me is the sheer amount of AP2 and AP3 weapons present in the game. I'm looking at Eldar, Dark Eldar and Tau, and to those annoying monstrous creature lists from Tyranids and Daemons. I feel that space marines are already overcosted and considering that a big chunk of that points cost is the 3+ armour save it is irritating to contantly find that I'm being denied it. That is my bone of contention here.

The topic really came up when talking to my friend Joel last night (Daemons, Eldar and Tyranids player) when we were discussing the rumours of the supposed upcoming Eldar codex. He wants lots of anti-flyer weapons, howling banshees to have AP2 close combat weapons again, and in the discussion I raised my points that Eldar are still a really good codex that doesn't need twinking up. I have to admit that I did get a bit angry about it for a short time.

I have played too many games under 5th and 6th edition where AP3 weapons and power weapons decimated my army. I'm dreading playing against Tau now after watching their new codex in action over the last couple weeks. It has got to a point where I feel it is too prevalent in the game right now.

I know nothing is going to change, and probably shouldn't, but one reason for my current break in playing is because of this.
